While there are a variety of legal forms of online gambling, sport betting is best done through reputable, licensed operators. There are also a number of unscrupulous sportsbooks out there that can take advantage of unsuspecting consumers, and drag out the process of payouts or refuse to honour winnings. Before you place your bets, make sure you know the rules. Here are some tips to avoid being ripped off by an offshore sportsbook.

First, make sure you’re familiar with the state gambling laws. While most states have some level of legal protections, others may not. New Hampshire, for example, is one of the few states to allow sports betting without a casino. Nonetheless, it’s a small market, and its success could be short-lived if Massachusetts launches mobile wagering. If the Massachusetts bill passes, then sports betting in the state will become legal as well.

In New York, sports betting is legal in two upstate casinos. The Rivers Sportsbook in Schenectady is the first legal sports book in the state. Despite the reversal of fortune, a bill to regulate online gambling sports in the state will not pass. While the proposal is unpopular with former governor Andrew Cuomo, state senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. is a leading advocate of the legislation and successfully won the support of the former governor.
